All's well. I've heard from SIMPLESEW and she has, indeed, been away from home! I'm glad she is OK. Her charm pack will be in the post after the Bank Holiday! I do like a happy ending ...

Calling out to SIMPLESEW!

This SMS Giveaway is proving a little complicated. The first name out of the hat was a "no reply" blogger and although I tried my best to find her I wasn't successful!

The second name was SIMPLESEW! Are you there?? I'm happy to say that you won a prize from me - a "La Belle Fleur" charm pack. I've sent you two emails asking for your address so I can put it in the post but haven't had a reply. I put a "read receipt" on the 2nd one but it wasn't returned. This is one of my last attempts to contact you before I draw another name. 

I am worried because we have communicated successfully before and have followed each other's blogs for some time. On reflection - I will wait until after the weekend - Monday morning before I do the draw again - in case you are away from home. Looking forward to hearing from you!

J'étais intéressé de voir que la majorité d'entre nous sont trop occupés avec nos aiguilles et machines à coudre pour regarder Downton Abbey! On ne peut pas croire les journaux! Parmi ceux qui se sentent capables de faire un choix - 74 aurait été un aristocrate et 23 aurait été une domestique! Quelques-uns inventé un autre emploi et a choisi de travailler dans les écuries, comme une couturière ou comme une gouvernante - il y avait un ménestrel aussi!
I was interested to see that most of us are too busy with our needles and sewing machines to watch Downton Abbey! You just can't believe what you read in the newspapers! Of those who felt able to make a choice  - 74 would have been an aristocrat and 23 a servant! A few invented another job and chose to work in the stables, as a dressmaker or as a governess and there was also one writer with ambitions to be a wandering minstrel! 

Mon arrière-grand-mère était "en service". Elle était totalement sourd et, sans doute, elle aurait eu peu de choix pour l'emploi. La maison où elle travaillait n'était pas aussi grande que Downton Abbey (ou le château de Highclere où l'émission est filmé), mais sa vie était dure sans tout le confort modernes pour aider aux travaux ménagers. Sa journée a commencé très tôt et fini très tard. Je me souviens qu'on m'a dit qu'elle avait vu sa famille une fois par année, sur la Fête des Mères quand elle a été autorisée d'avoir un jour de congé pour rendre visite à sa mère. Toutefois, si elle n'avait pas été "en service" et n'était pas tombé amoureux du jardinier en chef, l'histoire de ma famille aurait été différente! 
My Great-grandmother was "in service". She was profoundly deaf and thus at that time would have had few options for employment. The house where she worked was not as grand as Downton Abbey (or Highclere Castle where the programme is filmed) but her life was hard without all the modern conveniences to help with housework. Her day started very early and finished very late. I remember being told that she saw her family once a year on Mothering Sunday when she was allowed to have a day off to visit her mother. However, if she hadn't been "in service" and hadn't fallen in love with the Head Gardener then my family history would have been different!

La popularité de l'émission "Downton Abbey" a été étonnante.

Cette série met en scène la vie de la famille Anglaise fictif "Crawley" et de leurs domestiques. J'aime l'émission mais je n'ai pas vu quelqu'un avec un passe-temps créatif. Auriez-vous aimé vivre à "Downton Abbey" dans les années vingt? Auriez-vous préféré être un aristocrate ou un domestique? Quels sont les aspects de la vie que vous auriez aimé et quels sont les aspects de la vie que vous auriez eu du mal à affronter? 

The popularity of the TV drama "Downton Abbey" has been astonishing. The programme follows the life of the fictional English "Crawley" family and their servants. I like the programme but I've not seen anyone doing anything creative. Would you have liked to live at "Downton Abbey" in the 20's? Would you have preferred to be an aristocrat or a servant? What aspects of the life would you have enjoyed and what would you have found hard to face?
