"2012 Free Motion Quilting Challenge" - fevrier - February

Le "prof" du mois de février était Diane Gaudynski. J'ai un exemplaire du livre de Diane sur mon étagère et j'admire son quilting exquis!

February's professor was Diane Gaudynski. I have a copy of Diane's book on my shelf and I am a great admirer of her exquisite quilting.

Quand j'ai vu le sujet de son tutoriel, j'ai le souffle coupé par la peur - les plumes! Pas facile! Mais Diane a offert un tutoriel clair et plein d'informations utiles.
When I saw the subject of her tutorial I gasped in fear - feathers! Not easy!  However, Diane offered a clear tutorial that was full of useful information.

J'ai accepté de relever le défi - donc je dois essayer ...
I agreed to accept the Challenge - so I must try ... 

J'ai imprimé la photo de la belle plume ...
I printed the photo of the beautiful feather ... 

J'ai décalqué le motif  avec un marqueur sur le papier ("Golden Threads Quilting Paper").
I traced the motif on to Golden Threads Quilting Paper with a marker pen. 

J'ai épinglé le papier au sandwich quilt. Ensuite, j'ai cousu et a suivi les lignes. J'espérais d'ajouter le motif de ma mémoire!
I pinned the paper to a sample quilt sandwich. Then I stitched and followed the lines. I hoped to fix the motif in my memory!

  
Après avoir retiré le papier j'ai cousu les lignes en "écho" ...
After removing the paper I practised echo quilting lines ...

Aujourd'hui, j'ai essayé coudre le motif sans lignes à suivre ...

Today I tried stitching the motif without the lines to follow ...

Le deuxième essai ! Je vois que je manque beaucoup d'entraînement! Le mois de février est brève (même si nous avons eu une journée de plus cette année) et aussi j'ai pris des vacances. Mon entraînement faut continuer en mars! J'espère que je peux montrer une plume qui me plaît bientôt ...
The second try! I can see that I need much more practice! February is fleeting (even though we have had an extra day this year) and I have also been away for a holiday. I must carry on practising in March! I hope to be able to show you a feather that I am happy with soon ...

Jelly Roll Quilt.

Je suis heureuse d'annoncer que j'ai terminé un quilt. Celui-ci a été en attente depuis longtemps ...

J'ai cousu les blocs ensemble au début du mois de février 2012.

I finally sewed the blocks together at the beginning of February 2012...

J'ai ajouté la bordure ...
I added the border...

J'ai fait le matelassage sur le sandwich à la machine avec un motif simple avec des lignes sinueuses. Le quilt a été terminé sur le ferry pendant un voyage au Royaume-Uni le 13 Février. J'ai cousu le biais pendant la traversée.

I quilted the sandwich by machine with a simple meandering pattern. The quilt was finished on the ferry while travelling to the UK on the 13th February. I stitched the binding down during the crossing... 

L'envers - The back

J'ai utilisé un jelly roll: "Shangri-La" de moda et le modèle provient du livre  - "Jelly Roll Quilts" de Pam et Nicky Lintott. Je pense que le quilt indique les usages multiples et variés des jelly rolls ...

"Free Motion Quilting Project"

Pendant les premières semaines - J'ai m'exercé le "stippling". (Je ne suis pas certain du mot en français - peut-être c'est "le pointillage"?)
During the early weeks I practised "stippling" ... 

 
Il était plus facile à pointiller sur une petite échelle pour moi. Si j'ai commencé à grande échelle, il avait tendance à devenir un peu plus petite que j'ai avançé et il était plus difficile de maintenir une apparence uniforme. J'ai besoin de plus entrainement!
It was easier for me to stipple on a small scale. When I started with a larger scale it had a tendency to get smaller as I went along and it was more difficult to maintain an even appearance. I need more practice! 

Pendant la semaine dernière, j'ai cousu des lignes  ...
During last week I was stitching lines...

J'ai trouvé cela beaucoup plus facile après plusieurs années de confection de vêtements. Leah a proposé de couture sur tissu à rayures et cela a été très relaxant comme il y avait une voie claire à suivre. Il n'y avait pas besoin de paniquer au sujet de perdre le chemin! J'ai également suivi les lignes sur un panneau de faux appliqué. Une fois de plus c'était familière parce que j'ai l'expérience de l'utilisation des pochoirs quilting. Mais, les lignes sur le panneau sont permanents - il n'est pas possible de les effacer de dissimuler des erreurs lorsqu'on utilise un marqueur.

I found this much easier after many years of dressmaking. Leah suggested sewing on striped fabric and it was quite relaxing as there was a clear path to follow. There was no need to panic about losing the way! I also followed the lines on a cheater appliqué panel. Again this seemed familiar as I've experience of using quilting stencils. However, the lines on the panel are permanent - it isn't possible to erase them to hide any mistakes as you can with the lines drawn with a marker pen!  

C'est tout un bon entraînement et le panneau sera un coussin ...
It's all good practice and the panel will become a cushion...

J'ai fini le quilt ABC123 - enfin! Ceci est le quilt que j'ai offert comme un tutoriel ici ...
I've finished the ABC123 quilt - at last! This is the quilt that I offered as a tutorial here ...

Il y a beaucoup de projets dans mon atelier que je dois finir en 2012. Au moins c'est bien parti ...
There are plenty of projects in my sewing room that I must finish in 2012. At least this is a start ...

 

"2012 Free Motion Quilting Challenge"

J'ai tracé la feuille sur papier beaucoup de fois pour mémoriser le motif. Aujourd'hui je l'ai cousu pour la première fois. Je m'ai perdu quelques fois! Je suis assez content - pas mal -  mais j'espère que l'améliorer avec plus d'entrainement ...

I drew the leaf on paper many times in order to memorise the motif. Today I stitched it for the first time. I lost the way a few times! I'm reasonably happy - it's not too bad and I hope to improve it with more practice ...

Je visite régulièrement le "Free Motion Quilting Project" blog écrit par Leah Day. Au mois d'août 2009 Leah avait promis de créer 365 dessins pour FMQ et maintenant elle a terminé ce projet incroyable. Ses 365 idées merveilleuses va continuer d'être une bibliothèque de références pour les quilteuses...

I'm a regular visitor to the "Free Motion Quilting Project" blog written by Leah Day. In August 2009 Leah promised to create 365 FMQ designs and now she has finished this incredible project. Her 365 marvellous designs will continue to be a reference library for quilters...

Je suis très heureux d'avoir trouvé un autre événement sur la blogosphère qui se concentrera sur FMQ (piqué libre). Cette fois, l'hôtesse est Vicki sur son blog "sew inspired" et la fête commence le 3 janvier.

I'm very happy to have found another event out there in the blogosphere which will focus on free motion quilting (FMQ). This time the hostess is Vicki at her blog "sew inspired" and the fun starts on January 3rd.

Je voudrais vous montrer mon cadeau d'anniversaire parce que je suis si heureuse. Ma machine à coudre (Horizon Janome 7700) a été livrée complète avec une grande table de couture comme accessoire - vous pouvez me voir à l'utiliser ici:

I would like to show you my birthday present because I am so pleased with it. My sewing machine (Janome Horizon 7700) was delivered complete with a large sewing table extension - you can see me using it here:

J'aime faire le matelassage de mes quilts à la machine mais j'ai eu l'habitude d'élever mes épaules et mes coudes alors que j'ai cousu parce que la table claire est plus élevée que mon bureau. Après quelques heures de couture mes épaules et mes bras étaient douloureux. Très inconfortable!

I like to use machine quilting for my projects but I had a habit of raising my shoulders and my elbows while I sewed because the clear table is higher than my desk. After a few hours sewing my shoulders and my arms were sore. Very uncomfortable!

C'est possible d'adapter l'insert pour toutes les marques de machine à coudre. La table est compacte et se plie facilement quand je veux la ranger. La table est légere mais solide. Ma machine est très lourde, mais la table ne vacille jamais.
It's possible to have an insert cut to fit all makes of sewing machine. The table is compact and folds away easily when I have finished with it. It is light but strong. My machine is very heavy but the table never wobbles.

Je mets la table devant mon bureau. Maintenant, j'ai une surface complètement plate pour le quilting. Le bureau supporte le poids de le quilt. Mes bras sont plus détendus et ne me fait pas mal. Je suis contente!
I place the table in front of my desk. Now I have a completely flat surface for quilting. The desk supports the weight of the quilt. My arms are more relaxed and do not hurt any more. I am happy!
