"2012 Free Motion Quilting Challenge" - fevrier - February

Le "prof" du mois de février était Diane Gaudynski. J'ai un exemplaire du livre de Diane sur mon étagère et j'admire son quilting exquis!

February's professor was Diane Gaudynski. I have a copy of Diane's book on my shelf and I am a great admirer of her exquisite quilting.

Quand j'ai vu le sujet de son tutoriel, j'ai le souffle coupé par la peur - les plumes! Pas facile! Mais Diane a offert un tutoriel clair et plein d'informations utiles.
When I saw the subject of her tutorial I gasped in fear - feathers! Not easy!  However, Diane offered a clear tutorial that was full of useful information.

J'ai accepté de relever le défi - donc je dois essayer ...
I agreed to accept the Challenge - so I must try ... 

J'ai imprimé la photo de la belle plume ...
I printed the photo of the beautiful feather ... 

J'ai décalqué le motif  avec un marqueur sur le papier ("Golden Threads Quilting Paper").
I traced the motif on to Golden Threads Quilting Paper with a marker pen. 

J'ai épinglé le papier au sandwich quilt. Ensuite, j'ai cousu et a suivi les lignes. J'espérais d'ajouter le motif de ma mémoire!
I pinned the paper to a sample quilt sandwich. Then I stitched and followed the lines. I hoped to fix the motif in my memory!

After removing the paper I practised echo quilting lines ...

Aujourd'hui, j'ai essayé coudre le motif sans lignes à suivre ...

Today I tried stitching the motif without the lines to follow ...

Le deuxième essai ! Je vois que je manque beaucoup d'entraînement! Le mois de février est brève (même si nous avons eu une journée de plus cette année) et aussi j'ai pris des vacances. Mon entraînement faut continuer en mars! J'espère que je peux montrer une plume qui me plaît bientôt ...
The second try! I can see that I need much more practice! February is fleeting (even though we have had an extra day this year) and I have also been away for a holiday. I must carry on practising in March! I hope to be able to show you a feather that I am happy with soon ...

Jelly Roll Quilt.

J'ai cousu les blocs ensemble au début du mois de février 2012.

J'ai fait le matelassage sur le sandwich à la machine avec un motif simple avec des lignes sinueuses. Le quilt a été terminé sur le ferry pendant un voyage au Royaume-Uni le 13 Février. J'ai cousu le biais pendant la traversée.

I quilted the sandwich by machine with a simple meandering pattern. The quilt was finished on the ferry while travelling to the UK on the 13th February. I stitched the binding down during the crossing...

"Free Motion Quilting Project"

Pendant les premières semaines - J'ai m'exercé le "stippling". (Je ne suis pas certain du mot en français - peut-être c'est "le pointillage"?)
During the early weeks I practised "stippling" ... 

 
Il était plus facile à pointiller sur une petite échelle pour moi. Si j'ai commencé à grande échelle, il avait tendance à devenir un peu plus petite que j'ai avançé et il était plus difficile de maintenir une apparence uniforme. J'ai besoin de plus entrainement!
It was easier for me to stipple on a small scale. When I started with a larger scale it had a tendency to get smaller as I went along and it was more difficult to maintain an even appearance. I need more practice! 

Pendant la semaine dernière, j'ai cousu des lignes  ...
During last week I was stitching lines...

J'ai trouvé cela beaucoup plus facile après plusieurs années de confection de vêtements. Leah a proposé de couture sur tissu à rayures et cela a été très relaxant comme il y avait une voie claire à suivre. Il n'y avait pas besoin de paniquer au sujet de perdre le chemin! J'ai également suivi les lignes sur un panneau de faux appliqué. Une fois de plus c'était familière parce que j'ai l'expérience de l'utilisation des pochoirs quilting. Mais, les lignes sur le panneau sont permanents - il n'est pas possible de les effacer de dissimuler des erreurs lorsqu'on utilise un marqueur.

I found this much easier after many years of dressmaking. Leah suggested sewing on striped fabric and it was quite relaxing as there was a clear path to follow. There was no need to panic about losing the way! I also followed the lines on a cheater appliqué panel. Again this seemed familiar as I've experience of using quilting stencils. However, the lines on the panel are permanent - it isn't possible to erase them to hide any mistakes as you can with the lines drawn with a marker pen!  

C'est tout un bon entraînement et le panneau sera un coussin ...
It's all good practice and the panel will become a cushion... 

 

"2012 Free Motion Quilting Challenge"

Aujourd'hui, c'est le dernier jour de janvier. C'est la fin du premier mois du "2012 Free Motion Quilting Challenge". Il a été très agréable! 
C'est vrai - à l'école j'ai fait mes devoirs à la dernière minute - toujours! C'est la même chose avec mes petits feuilles pour le projet. Voila - enfin!

Today's the last day of January. It's the end of the first month for the "2012 Free Motion Quilting Challenge". It's been great fun! 

Yes - it's true! At school I always left my homework until the last minute! Now it's the same with my leaves for the project. Here they are - at last!

Je suis désolé - c'est difficile de voir. Je suis heureuse - c'est pas mal. Je n'étais pas aussi courageuse que Béatrice qui nous a montré ses feuilles sur un quilt véritable. Mais maintenant, je pense que je serais suffisamment confiants d'utiliser ce motif sur un de mes quilts. C'est très jolie! Je vous remercie, Frances.

I'm sorry - it's rather difficult to see. I'm happy - it's not bad. I wasn't as brave as Béatrice who showed us her leaves on a real quilt. However, I think I now have the confidence to use this motif on one of my quilts. It's very pretty! Thank you Frances.

J'attends avec impatience le projet de février ...

"2012 Free Motion Quilting Challenge"

J'ai tracé la feuille sur papier beaucoup de fois pour mémoriser le motif. Aujourd'hui je l'ai cousu pour la première fois. Je m'ai perdu quelques fois! Je suis assez content - pas mal -  mais j'espère que l'améliorer avec plus d'entrainement ...

I drew the leaf on paper many times in order to memorise the motif. Today I stitched it for the first time. I lost the way a few times! I'm reasonably happy - it's not too bad and I hope to improve it with more practice ...

Un projet pour 2012 - A project for 2012

J'ai promis de participer au " 2012 Free Motion Quilting Challenge". Un défi lancé par "Sewcalgirl" dans son blog. C'est une opportunité  merveilleuse pour améliorer mes compétences dans le matelassage en utilisant une machine à coudre. Chaque mois, en 2012, un expert en FMQ partagera un tutoriel avec des astuces pour aider les quilteuses à apprendre et / ou à améliorer leurs compétences dans le matelassage avec piqué libre. Il y aura beaucoup de "giveaways" aussi! J'attends avec impatience pour janvier...

I have promised to take part in the 2012 free motion quilting challenge launched by "Sewcalgirl" in her blog. She is presenting her readers with a fabulous opportunity to improve free motion quilting skills during 2012. Every month in 2012 a FMQ expert will share a tutorial and tips. Sew-Ezi

I would like to show you my birthday present because I am so pleased with it. My sewing machine (Janome Horizon 7700) was delivered complete with a large sewing table extension - you can see me using it here:

J'aime faire le matelassage de mes quilts à la machine mais j'ai eu l'habitude d'élever mes épaules et mes coudes alors que j'ai cousu parce que la table claire est plus élevée que mon bureau. Après quelques heures de couture mes épaules et mes bras étaient douloureux. Très inconfortable!

I like to use machine quilting for my projects but I had a habit of raising my shoulders and my elbows while I sewed because the clear table is higher than my desk. After a few hours sewing my shoulders and my arms were sore. Very uncomfortable!

C'est possible d'adapter l'insert pour toutes les marques de machine à coudre. La table est compacte et se plie facilement quand je veux la ranger. La table est légere mais solide. Ma machine est très lourde, mais la table ne vacille jamais.
It's possible to have an insert cut to fit all makes of sewing machine. The table is compact and folds away easily when I have finished with it. It is light but strong. My machine is very heavy but the table never wobbles.

Je mets la table devant mon bureau. Maintenant, j'ai une surface complètement plate pour le quilting. Le bureau supporte le poids de le quilt. Mes bras sont plus détendus et ne me fait pas mal. Je suis contente!
I place the table in front of my desk. Now I have a completely flat surface for quilting. The desk supports the weight of the quilt. My arms are more relaxed and do not hurt any more. I am happy!

 

Le progrès... Progress

Le quilt est maintenant prêt pour le matelassage et la finition. J'ai choisi matelassage à la machine en utilisant une grille comme avant. Si je couds des lignes droites, je ne marque pas la quilt avec un crayon ou une craie.

The quilt is now ready for the quilting and finishing touches. I chose to machine quilt a grid pattern as on the damaged quilt. If I am stitching straight lines I don't mark the quilt with a pencil or chalk marker.

Il ya deux ans, j'ai lu une suggestion dans un livre américain au sujet de patchwork. La femme écrivain dit qu'elle utilisait ruban bleu pour peintres comme un guide. Elle l'a acheté chez le brico! Je n'avais jamais vu ce ruban de masquage.

About two years ago I read a suggestion in an American patchwork book. The author said that she used blue painter's tape, bought at the DIY store, as a guide when quilting straight lines. I had never seen blue masking tape!

Ce n'était pas un succès! Le ruban n' était pas bien collé et il a glissé constamment.
It wasn't a great success! The tape would not stay stuck to the quilt and slipped about all the time. 

Ensuite, une gentille amie américaine m'a envoyé un peu de ruban bleu d'essayer. C'est merveilleux et marche très bien. La couleur vive est facile à voir pendant la couture. Le ruban adhère bien au quilt, ne bouge pas et chaque bande peut être utilisé 4-5 fois. Il n'y a pas des taches collants sur ​​le tissu. Le ruban est disponible en plusieurs largeurs pour faire des grilles de différentes tailles. Finalement, j'ai trouvé le ruban chez B&Q en Angleterre. (C'est la même entreprise que Brico Dépôt en France.) Scotch 3M est une bande de très bonne qualité. (J'ai trouvé ruban bleu moins cher, mais ce n'est pas aussi bon.)

Then a kind American friend sent me a little of the blue tape to try. It is brilliant and works a treat! The bright blue colour is very easy to see when stitching. The tape sticks to the quilt very well, stays put and each strip can be used 4-5 times. It leaves no sticky marks on the fabric and the tape is available in several widths which makes it easy to make grids of different sizes. Eventually I found some in B&Q! Scotch 3M is a good quality tape. (I have found cheaper blue tapes since but they don't work as well.)

Pour mon quilt, j'ai utilisé un fil décoratif sur le dessus et un fil crème (100% coton) dans la canette. 

For my quilt I used a decorative thread in the top and a 100% cotton thread in cream to match my backing fabric in the bobbin.

Aucune marque à effacer. Facile! Maintenant, j'ai besoin d'ajouter le biais...
