The popularity of the TV drama "Downton Abbey" has been astonishing. The programme follows the life of the fictional English "Crawley" family and their servants. I like the programme but I've not seen anyone doing anything creative. Would you have liked to live at "Downton Abbey" in the 20's? Would you have preferred to be an aristocrat or a servant? What aspects of the life would you have enjoyed and what would you have found hard to face?

No, I don't think I would have liked to live at "Downton Abbey" in the 20's, but if I had to, I'd prefer to be an aristocrat (without a doubt). I think the absence of privileges (women didn't have many rights at all, if any) and conveniences (like the washing machine, dishwasher, microwave, automatic cars, etc.) would have made life seem a drudgery at any class level. The nice part would have been manners (as most people were required to have manners back then). :)

Debra Lee a dit… #

I would love to be a servant. I don't think I could live a life that was planned out and has so many expectations!

Janet a dit… #

I haven't ever seen Downtown Abbey as I don't get it on my television channels. It seems like it is all the rage though. If I lived in England in the 20s I would not want to be a servant but I wouldn't want to have servants either. I would want to be a wandering minstrel. :)

I have never seen this program either but from what you have said I guess I would prefer to be an aristocrat as I have read books from this era and being a servant was not pleasant , they had no time off , it was a life of drudgery . Thanks for the chance.

Do I dare admit that I haven't seen the show yet? I know, I'm the only one left on planet earth that is not watching! I hope to catch up soon though. I hope I still qualify for a chance to win!?! Thanks for a very nice prize!

I am not a DA watcher, but I think I would have rather been an aristocrat. I actually really prefer living in this time than wishing I had been born in a different time period. Thanks for the great giveaway chance!

I wouldn't have liked to have lived then - a hard life for the servants and a boring life for the aristocrats I think, especially the women. Thanks for a lovely giveaway!

I would have rather been an aristocrat on Downton Abbey but would miss all the conveniences we have today and the technology.
Thanks for the giveaway.

I just love Downton Abbey. If I lived there, I would want to be one of the aristocrats. Then I would be able to sit and stitch! Thank you for the lovely giveaway. Those fabrics are just gorgeous.

Pat V. a dit… #

My daughter and I watch Downton Abbey together. (Very upset about Matthew, btw!) It would have been hard to be "lower class" in the society of that time. I also agree that a woman's role in the aristocracy was quite confining in many ways -- strict expectations regarding behavior and few rights. I'm glad I was born in the 20th century!

Bev C a dit… #

Hello,

I love this show. I can't believe how snobby the upper class was back then. Though the servants do seem to get everything supplied, but they do work long hours. The servants are the only one which seem to be doing sewing, mostly mending yet the ladies of the day back then would have done some sort of embroidery.

Happy days.

I LOVE Downton Abbey! You're right - apart from the cook making some pretty amazing looking food (all on a wood stove!), you don't see anyone doing anything creative. I would have preferred to be an aristocrat (I would love to live in Downton Abbey!), but would not have liked to be a woman in the 20's. I really like electricity, the internet, my dishwasher and flushing toilets!

I LOVE Downton Abbey. Of course, I don't like that Matthew was killed off. It all seems so very romantic, but in reality, I don't think I would have liked to live then. As a servant, life was harsh at best. They worked from long hard hours for very little pay. On the other hand, the girls of aristocratic families really had almost no say in the way their lives would play out. Many, if the estate was entailed away from them were forced to be governesses giving up the manner in which they were brought up, unless they could find a rich husband. So, as romantic as it seems, I'll take today. but I won't stop watching!

I wouldn't have wanted to live in that time period but if I had to I would rather be the aristocrat. I love the pretty dresses that they wear and to have someone else do household chores. The most difficult part of living then would be the lack of modern medicine and technology. Thanks!

Daryl @ Patchouli Moon Studio a dit… #

Downton Abbey is fun to watch. I think the upper crust did embroidery or crewel work and the servants did mending a lot. I am glad I didn't live then as I wouldn't have the materials and time to make things I love to make today. I wouldn't want to be a servant as you had NO life of your own. You couldn't get married very easily or have your own children (who would look after them?). Glad I live now.

For your question - I go back and forth with wanting to live in any other time period than this one. However, if I was to go back to the 20's I am not sure which life I would want. I think being a servant is more suitable for my personality - but it would be HARD! On the other hand, having to be an aristocrat and living up to other people's standards would be HARD also.... so I guess I am pretty thankful to be right where I am supposed to be! Great question and I am loving everyone's answers!

I haven't watched "Downton Abbey" but from what I know about the 1920s, I would like to have had enough money to live as an aristocrat but to have been able to live any way I liked. What a great show, just found it on netflix and finished season 2.
part of me wishes it was the OLD days, not like downton though..... well before the whole women lib. movement I think, as a young Christian mother and wife it's hard to be a submissive wife and stay at home mom, without having friends who look down on me for not working- I do work from home with my quilting.
Then again we have so many NEAT things nowadays, even though I've never owned a cell phone, but just having a dish washer, washing machine, vaccuum(what's that??) and a TOILET ha!! okay toilets did exist in the 20s....you know what I mean

I really enjoy watching Downton Abbey. I don't know that I would have enjoyed living in England during WWI or during the economic collapse of the 20s, but if you put those two historical facts out of the picture, I would have enjoyed being an aristocrat. I enjoy the etiquette of the day. It seems like we have no manners anymore....it's nice to hear someone addressed by a title or even as Mrs. So and So sometimes. I'm afraid I would have grown a bit bored though. I don't know what the ladies do with all of their time! Thanks for the interesting question.

I would definitely rather be a keeper of servants than a servant. Upper-class women also had far more freedom than those lower down the social scale.
However, I am surprised that the ladies of Downton are never shown doing any of the things that would have been expected in those days eg doing embroidery or painting watercolours. I have some needle point done by my husband's grandmother who - while not an aristocrat - was of the servant-keeping classes.

PS I do a weekly exercise class in a hall used as one of the Downton locations!

Anonyme a dit… #

Yikes - I have not seen Downtown Abby. Do not think I would want to be a servant - such long hours - hard work - and lots of aggravation to put up with. Would not want to be aristocrat and think I was above others either.

I would have to be an aristocrat as I am too lazy and too argumentative to be a servant!

Patricia a dit… #

I would not like to live in the 20s but I would like to live in a great big house with servants to do the housework of course.

Pamela a dit… #

I would love to have a time machine and experience what it was like to live in other times and places! As for Downton Abbey, I love the home, but most of the aristocratic women seemed to have nothing to do except dress up, and the servants seemed to work endlessly. I would like to be someone like Matthew'a mother, who always found good work to do. Thanks for the fun giveaway! I love that fabric!

J'ai jamais vu l'emission, mais je sais qu'il s'agit d'une famille dans les années 20s. Bien qu'il semble un bonne epoque, il etait entre deux guerres terribles, alors je ne voudrais pas y'habiter!

I haven't watched Downton Abbey yet, though it's in my queue. I imagine that I will watch all the available episodes in one sitting! Even though I haven't watched it, I'm fairly sure I would not like to live in any other time period (so far) that the one I'm in now. I love my conveniences and communications too much :-)

Norma a dit… #

I love Downton Abbey! Oh I would have loved to be an aristocrat of that era, but my lineage tells me I would have been an Irish servant and that is OK. I would have made beautiful handmade quilts and crocheted/tatted items!

Hmmm. If i=I did live therer I would not mind bring a lady's maid I think. But I like living where I am now :)

Heather a dit… #

I wouldn't have wanted to live then or there. I do think that the servants had more fulfilling lives. they actually did something and helped. They also had fewer social restrictions on the parts of their life that really matter, such as who they could associate with and who they could love.

Mary E. Stephens a dit… #

No, I wouldn't have liked to live at Downton Abbey in the 20s. I've only seen a few clips of the program, but I wouldn't enjoy living in those circumstances at that time. I tend to think about the wars and complications of life that were involved in past eras and think how I would not have wanted to live then. Plus, I believe God put me where He wanted me and in the time He wanted me. :-)

What a delightful blog you have!
Downton Abbey is a joy but its very much a false representation of what most aristocratic houses would have been like Im sure lol
Id have loved to wear long skirts, despite the difficulties back then in keeping them clean!
But Id have been in bother whether I was up or down stairs!
I would have found it very hard not to say what I felt lol

I haven't seen "Downtown Abbey," but I have heard about it. I'm not sure I would have liked living there in the 20's. Too many restrictions, like having to wear a dress. LOL I hate wearing dresses.

I have never watched the show myself, but have heard about it. I would not want to have lived back then, but if I had, I would perfer to have been of the aristocracy.

I think I only would have liked to be an aristocrat at Downton for the wardrobe. Gorgeous , detailed clothing! Life in service would have been challenging, but I think the servants were actually much more free than the aristocrats. Many thanks for the chance!

I would not like to live in that time period, but if I did, I'd prefer to be an aristocrat. Why, because I'd have more time for needlework. Also, my daughter is learning French and her instructor is from France! My daughter's dream is to visit France someday.

Well, it would be a lot easier to be an aristocrat. The servants worked such hard and long days. Some of the aristocratic women must have been so bored tho! Some got out, and had a life, but too many just sat home and worked on needle point, and directed the servants around.

Love Love Love Downton Abbey. I would have to be an Aristrocrat but I am sure I would struggle with the doing nothing but look pretty and find a suitable husband side of it. I would love the cloths and like other women of the period (though not in the show) at least I would have time to hand embroider till I went blind from the poor lighting.

Lin a dit… #

Hello Lynne. The 20's was a time of great change for both the aristocrats and the servants - the security of income and employment was disappearing and in both cases life would have been prone to change. I have to say though that because of all the beautiful clothes, I would have loved to be an aristocrat! Thank you for taking part.

Lynne, I love this "Sew Retro" Makower fabric, haven't seen anything like it in Canada. I'm not a TV watcher, however given the choice I'd pick Aristocrat. I'm not to sure how easy life for women would have been in that era.

Jane S. a dit… #

It would be difficult for me to live anywhere during the 1920's as it was a very restricted time for women. That being said, I'd love to live at Downton Abbey! I'd much rather be an Upstairs rather than a Downstairs. :)

I have not seen Downton Abbey yet, but hope to get caught up by watching it on Hulu. I have read that several quilters like to work on projects while watching the show. That's a good enough review for me, as quilters have great taste :) LOL. I don't think I'd like being a servant, but I don't think I'd like to have servants either. I'd like to do things on my own time. So I guess I'd be shunned to the stables, back in the day :)
