L'histoire de la machine à coudre - The history of my sewing machine...

The vintage sewing machine I bought at Agneaux is now at home! She's had a service and runs very well. I haven't changed my mind - I still think she's stunning!

The stitch quality is excellent and she runs very quietly.

J'adore les décorations en nacre ...
I love the mother of pearl decorations ...

I've discovered that she is, indeed, a German "Fräulein". It seems that she was made by Gritzner and is a Saxonia model.

I learned from the "sewalot" website here (thank you Alex) that the company was founded in Karlsruhe by Max Gritzner in 1872. The production at the factory continued 24 hours per day and made more than 3000 sewing machines each day! At the beginning of the new century Gritzner was the largest German manufacturer and was even bigger than Frister and Rossmann. Like the Singer factory in Scotland it had its own railway station. Production was interrupted by the First World War but the company survived and in 1925 Gritzner bought Frister and Rossmann and later merged with Pfälzische. In 1957 the company was bought by Pfaff.

I found a photo of a machine that is the same model as mine here

I mentioned that there was no manufacturer's label on my machine. I now know it should resemble this one ...

and should be here, under the other metal plate ...

You can see the holes where it was attached. Perhaps the previous owner thought it hid the pretty decals! Or perhaps she didn't like spiders!

The serial number is 2571624 and I think this means that she was made in about 1907. She's wearing well for her age!
