Do you like the quilt shown in my profile picture? I've been asked to write a bit about it.
The quilt was made using a pattern from Terry Atkinson called "Granny's Bloomers". http://www.atkinsondesigns.com
The fabrics are from Marcus and from the "Aunt Grace" range which reproduces fabrics from the 30s. I find the story of these "feedsack" fabrics very interesting.
During the time of the Great Depression in the United States items such as flour and food for the animals were sold in cotton sacks -"feedsacks". Originally the sacks were a natural colour and because times were hard women used the sacks to make clothes and underwear for their families.
The manufacturers started to print colourful patterns on their sacks so that they could be recycled by needlewomen. After the seam of the sack was unpicked there was about 90 x 90 cm of fabric. The fabrics became very popular and manufacturers competed to produce the most attractive and fashionable designs. More than 40 manufacturers produced more than 15,000 designs. This boosted the sales of the contents of the sacks.
Magazines imprimés patrons de couture...
Magazines printed sewing patterns for feedsacks...
In 1942 it was said that three million American women and children, rich and poor, were wearing "feedsack" clothing. Quel dommage ....
Now the world is experiencing financial problems again but the feedsacks look like this. What a pity...
